Matthews Mea Culpa Proves Just

Matthews Mea Culpa Proves Just How Small Town D.C. Really Is: Sure, MSNBC's Chris Matthews has apologized for his nasty remarks about Ted Koppel and Jim Lehrer, but one wonders why Matthews was so quick to retreat from the remarks he made at a Cable Television Public Affairs Association luncheon last week.

Truth be told, Washington, D.C. is the smallest of small towns, especially when it comes to this town's A-List social scene. My guess is that Matthews' wife, Kathleen, an anchor for the local ABC affiliate WJLA-TV, probably took her husband to task for what he said not long after it started hitting the papers around the country. The Matthews probably regularly rub elbows with the Koppels and the Lehrers at parties around town. It's more than likely that Chris Matthews comments might very well have gotten him and his wife disinvited from social functions around town. After all, if you're a social hostess in Georgetown who are you going to leave off your list, Koppel, Lehrer or Matthews? Credit Kathleen, a local news anchor who is probably far more sensitive to issues like this one, for her husband's very public apologies.
