I had meant to take a moment to get to Matt Millen, and his decision to throw a slur the way of ex-Detroit Lions wide reciever Johnnie Morton in the moments after Kansas City's 45-17 victory over the Lions at Ford Field on Sunday, but Rob Visconti, the Bleacher Guy, beat me to it:
[I]f a 23-game road losing streak, a 9-37 overall record, and an apparent case of Tourrete's won't get you fired, what will?
Which ought to be all there is to it, right? Before Millen became GM three years ago, the Lions finished with a 9-7 record, and nearly made the playoffs. Since then, nothing but disaster (including hiring a coach who actually declined the kickoff in an OT game). And now, with this on-field incident firmly in the books, you have to ask yourself whether or not Millen has the judgement and temperment to be an NFL General Manager.
Here's another passage from Visconti worth noting:
Morton, who spent the first eight years of his career in Detroit, fell victim to Millen's rebuilding "plan", and was released following the 2001 season. (I use the term "plan" very, very loosely. Millen had a plan, I suppose...much in the same way that a demolition crew has a plan for imploding a building.)
This is a bit insulting to demolition crews, who carefully plan a building's destruction in order to make sure surrounding structures aren't damaged and no innocent bystandards get injured. Which, come to think of it, simply further buttresses Rob's point about Millen. Somebody ought to buy him a one-way ticket out of Detroit to any destination Northwest flies, and right quick.
I’d really like to know the magic trick that Millen is pulling that’s kept him from getting canned; the team’s record for the past three years says it all.
The only positive thing about Millen’s tenure in Detroit is that it’s kept the big chunk-head off the air, and out of my ears. Unfortunately, I’m sure the second the Lions fire him, he’ll land a broadcast job and once again torment us viewers.
