The Ballpark Soundtrack

Skip Sauer has some thoughts about the use of theme music for each and every batter at Major League stadiums:

I suppose tunes from a clever organist probably go over most customers' heads, but the "theme music" blasted in every stadium before each batter's plate appearance bores me to death. Maybe the digital brigade can one day match the whimsy and spontaneity of the ballpark organist, but I'm not betting on it.

Even writing about this makes me feel old. Unfortunately, the last time I attended a game at Camden Yards, I felt like I was the victim of an unrelenting audio-visual assault on my senses -- so much so it detracted from my enjoyment of the game (bravo to the NHL, who has the good sense to silence the music during the run of play, unlike the NBA).

Now, I'm not sure I want to go back to the days of Jane Jarvis at Shea Stadium. On more than a few occassions as a child, I can remember being bored out of my mind by seemingly endless organ seranades. Is it too much to ask for a little balance?

Something tells me it is.

A pro-antitrust economist wishing for a long-abandoned status quo? I’ll try and feign surprise.
