Little noticed over the Labor Day weekend was Masters Champ Phil Mickelson's decision to end his relationship with Titleist in favor for a new megabucks deal with Callaway. But No Three Putts is wondering if Mickelson hasn't made a deal with the devil:
I hope everyone enjoyed watching Phil Mickelson play great golf this year, I know I did. I have a bad feeling that Phil's greed, his inferior new clubs and his signing with Callaway golf will be the demise of this year's Masters champion.
Recall that it wasn't long ago that Mickelson accused Tiger Woods of using inferior equipment. As it turned out, Mickelson's first appearance as Callaway's star endorser at the Canadian Open was less than stellar.
Which leads us to Blogger Vance:
The question remains as to whether the change in equipment will effect Phil's game. He seems to think it will help him achieve his "ultimate goal of becoming the No. 1 player in the world." Tell that to David Duval.
Ouch. But at the same time, a great example of just how the Blogosphere can work to undermine commercial messages that don't stand up to scrutiny. After reading this stuff, I don't think I'd even buy a hat with a Callaway logo.
