Wie Marches On

With the first two rounds out of the way, the U.S. Amateur Public Links is now in match play, and 15-year old Michelle Wie proved that she belonged by edging Will Claxton 1-up:

“She did an incredible job,” Claxton said. “I didn’t play bad out there. I hit a lot of good iron shots. She hit fairways and greens and she putted really well. Her short game’s incredible. I was very impressed.”

Wie returns to the course this morning to face C.D. Hockersmith. If she defeats him, she’ll face the winner of the match between Tyler Neal and Jim Renner at 1:20 p.m.

Just a thought: Now that Wie has defeated a man head to head in match play, might not some of the female golfers who have bested Wie decide it’s time to try their luck against the men? I hope so.

UPDATE: Wie takes down Hockersmith, 6 and 5. We won’t know who Michelle will play next until the conclusion of the Renner-Neal match. Currently, Renner is 2-up on the 15th hole.

UPDATE: She did it again, taking down Renner 3 and 1. No word yet on who’s next.

Folks, this is like watching Chris Everet march through her first big tennis tournament.

Wie just won her match against Hockersmith, requiring just 13 holes to do so. She finished 6-up with 4 birdies and a bogey.
