Nick Denton's Gawker Media empire has finally entered the sports blogging game with today's hard launch of Dead Spin. I say hard launch because the archive goes back a couple of weeks.
From the Gawker release (via email):
Deadspin. Launching now, it's Gawker Media's newest title -- sports news without access, favor, or discretion. Put it this way: despite the NFL's and ESPN's best attempts, Deadspin hasn't forgotten about Ron Mexico.DEADSPIN
http://www.deadspin.comDeadspin is written by Will Leitch, of online magazine The Black Table, assisted by Rick Chandler. (Will is a huge St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Cardinals fan, but I've agreed not to hold that against him.)
Overall, it looks and reads like something from the Gawker empire -- sort of like Wonkette meets ESPN Hollywood. It should fit right in. Best of luck to Will, Rick and everyone involved.
Full disclosure: I exchanged a couple of e-mails with Denton on the possibility of doing a sports blog for Gawker over a period of several months, but it never went past the talking stages. I don't think it matters, but just in case, I thought I'd put it out there.
