I've been overwhelmed by the images coming out of the Gulf Coast. One of America's greatest cities has been destroyed and our country will be feeling the repurcussions of this disaster for decades.
Literally millions of people need our help now. Please give to the American Red Cross and be as generous as you can.
UPDATE: NBC is hosting a charity concert for the victims of the Hurricane on Friday night. And thanks to Amazon.com for changing their minds about collecting donations through their Web site.
As others have pointed out, Instapundit is listing charities his readers are suggesting. Please visit and explore those choices.
And thanks to Devin McCullen for pointing out the efforts of some volunteers at Baseball Think Factory.
ANOTHER UPDATE: Some good news from the world of sport:
Numerous members of the sports community offered their assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The NFL and the New York Yankees each donated $1 million to the American Red Cross on Wednesday.Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said Wednesday that he will match donations up to $1 million given during the team's preseason game against Tampa Bay on Thursday night. All donations will go to the American Red Cross.
Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair teamed with Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre and arranged to fill a tractor-trailer with relief supplies bound for Mississippi on Wednesday. McNair also asked his fans to help him raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina. McNair, who has a home near Favre's in Hattiesburg, Miss., is offering to swap an autographed photo for each minimum donation of $100 to his foundation.
The Packers also flew to Nashville, Tenn., on Wednesday for their final preseason game _ but only after loading the team airplane with generators and other emergency supplies to help the victims of the hurricane.
Serena Williams announced she would donate $100 for every ace she has the rest of the year, beginning with her two in Wednesday night's second-round victory at the U.S. Open.
OT UPDATE: Thanks to John Fontana at Boltsmag for developing the following .jpg file donations to any charity engaged in disaster relief:
John has made this .jpg available to anyone who would like to use it. Click here for the original image.
MEMORY UPDATE: Chris Lynch remembers an overlooked treasure of New Orleans.

Yeah, it’s truly awful down there. 2 things I thought I’d mention: 1) If you don’t know, you can go to Instapundit today (Thursday), and he’s got links to all kinds of charities that different bloggers are supporting.
2) This is a little more long-range, but the gang over at BaseballThinkFactory is starting to organize a drive for folks to get together, probably in early October, and collect baseball equipment & money for the hurricane victims. (Check the link for more details, although it’s still fairly nebulous at this point.) It may seem trivial right now, but it’s still something that will help make people’s lives a little better.
A local politician said the death toll in Louisiana alone could top 10,000. And the coast of Mississippi was the area that took the brunt of the storm.
