Paul Westhead, Meet The WNBA

Well, the WNBA did something yesterday that made me sit up and notice -- and that was the hiring of former NBA and college head coach Paul Westhead as the new head coach of the Phoenix Mercury.

Westhead, who coached the Lakers to their first title in the 1980s before annoying Magic Johnson, and then led Loyola Marymount to the Elite Eight in the wake of the on-court death of Hank Gathers, is best known for his devotion to up tempo offense.

I admit I've got a soft spot for Westhead by dint of the fact that we worked for the same company back when he was head coach of the Denver Nuggets and I worked for COMSAT, the team's parent company.

To be quite honest, I'm interested to see just how "Paul Ball" -- last seen in action at George Mason University in Northern Virginia -- translates to the women's game. Check out Women's Hoops for more details.
