CFL Player HIV Positive

The CFL doesn't make much news here in the States (though I actually caught the coverage of the Eskimos-Stampeders playoff game on one of the Fox cable channels in the high 200s on Sunday), but this story probably will.

Whew, talk about old news EMac.

ESPN’s Outside the Lines focused on this story last night. Nothing incredibly new, but it was informative and tried to tackle the privacy vs perceived safety topic best they could in the 20-minute spot.

Even though he once was team captain of the Alabama Crimson Tide, I doubt it will get any attention in the States. This story broke more than two weeks ago when
he was arrested. Why is the AP picking it up now?

Maybe this story got someone’s attention? “An Ontario Court Judge ruled Monday that an HIV-positive man from Hamilton, Ontario, Johnson Aziga, will stand trial on first-degree murder charges in the deaths of two women he allegedly infected through unprotected sex.”

I’d have posted about Smith three weeks ago, but I couldn’t possibly have written about the Roughriders’ middle linebacker getting HIV while observing even my own minimal standards of good taste. (And as for the game, it’s not really news when the Stampeders implode in the playoffs against my Eskies.)

Writing about an athlete with HIV is against good taste? I thought the media, in general, did a swell job in doing so.
