Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun was suspended for the first month of the season after testing positive for the banned supplement ephedra, a person close to the player said Friday.Sauerbrun will miss the first four regular-season games if his expected appeal is denied, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the NFL has not announced the suspension.
Sauerbrun was brought in from Carolina before last season and is attending Denver's three-day minicamp this week. He was not immediately available for comment.
Sauerbrun, who has previously been fined and suspended over his playing weight (why else take Ephedra?), has also had his name mentioned in connection with the criminal trial of Dr. James Shortt, who earlier this year pleaded guilty to charges of distributing anabolic steroids and human growth hormone to a group of eight NFL players who have yet to be named.
While the punter has been more than successful on the field, his off-field antics may have made him more of a liability. Stay tuned.
