Can You Skate?

"I just purchased body armor so another person can hit me with a stick and I could not be more excited." These were my thoughts as I tried on the shiny new hockey pads I had just purchased. I had always wanted to try ice hockey but never had the chance growing up in the Pacific Northwest. Perhaps not the smartest thing to do in my early thirties but at the age of 31 I started looking around for adult hockey programs in Washington, D.C. The program offered by Hockey North America (www.hna.com)

Have a blast, and keep those feet moving. It’s all too easy to coast around out there and think you’re flying, when in fact you’re floating around like a blimp. As you keep going, if you have the chance to have someone videotape your games, you’ll have a whole new perspective on how ridiculously fast top-level hockey really is.

i am breaking in some new skates now myself. it sucks. my old ones are soooo comfortable it’s ridiculous, however they are dying a slow death. once the new ones are broken in, things are a lot more comfortable. good luck.

Yeah.. I just signed up at the new Kettler Ice Center for their “Learn To Play Hockey” class.. should be interesting. Have played roller hockey for a couple years, but honestly, am getting ready to be humbled pretty quickly out there on the ice..

I experienced much of the same things about 8 years ago. I grew up in West Texas, and started playing at 33. There was a few months of learning how to skate, but luckily the hockey sense of knowing where to be on the rink came easily. 8 years later I tell everybody it is the most intense, exciting sport in the world.
