Cool New York Pics From Matt And Missy

After reading that New York City might start requiring permits and insurance from amateur photographers, I was reminded of two New York based bloggers whose photography you ought to check out: Matt Law and Missy Schwartz.

I came to know Matt through some of his comments on Off Wing, which led me to become familiar with his Flickr album. Sometimes I feel like I've "known" Missy forever, but it's really just since I've been blogging. She's got a great Flickr album too.

Stop by both places and say hello.

D.C. United Postgame

After a somewhat shaky first half, D.C. United collected itself and came away with a 4-1 victory at home last night at RFK Stadium. I was lucky enough to corral Dave Lifton and Aaron Stollar once again to get their thoughts on a win that pushed United to the top half of the table in the Eastern Conference.

Here's one thing we missed that Steven Goff of the Post picked up: United are on the verge of a deal that will send defender Facundo Erpen to Colorado for defender Greg Vanney.

Wrestling With the Issue of Steroids

During the "Hill Man Morning Show" on Boston rock radio station WAAF, host Greg Hill was discussing the Chris Benoit murder-suicide story, and how steroids may have played a part in Benoit's actions. He went as far as to suggest that there should be drug testing implemented in professional wrestling, just like other major sports like baseball and football.

But what we all must remember is that "professional wrestling" is not the same as other sports. In the NFL and the MLB, the NHL and the NBA, every team goes out each night with a chance to win, with no outcome guaranteed. But professional wrestling does not share that ideal. The wrestling people watch on tv is all about entertainment and ratings, and its matches are predetermined in order to create the biggest buzz and hype for the WWE.

Major sports are about entertainment, but they are also about the purity of the sport and teams of talented athletes striving to be the best in their sport. The WWE and its brand of wrestling is about making money and giving the people what they want to see. There is no real purity about it.

Jemele Hill of ESPN.com declares that;

Although pro wrestling makes no illusions about its purpose, the countless deaths suggest it's time to scrutinize what goes on there with the same seriousness as in the NBA or NFL. Pro wrestling is still sports entertainment, which doesn't make it all that different from the sports leagues that don't have predetermined outcomes.

In fact, the issue of predetermined outcomes does make them totally different, which makes mandatory drug testing nearly impossible for wrestlers. There's no way the WWE will ban its stars for using anabolic steroids, or any other drugs. Do I want to see changes made? Yes. Will the WWE institute a drug testing policy that will be enforced? I doubt it. The murder-suicide of Chris Benoit and his family is another black eye for wrestling, but like the deaths of Owen Heart and Eddie Guerrero, the WWE will continue as is.

Alternate MLS Slogans

Before settling in for tonight's match between D.C. United and the Colorado Rapids at RFK Stadium, I had a chance to discuss ESPN's new slogan for its MLS telecasts with some of my friends in the press box.

"You're a soccer fan; you just don't know it yet," is what ESPN is foisting on the masses, something the hard core Soccer types I talked to earlier tonight weren't too happy about. It's a conversation I've had with hockey fans as well, most recently in Columbus last weekend where talk around the table concerned the NHL's inability to sell the game on its own merits.

In any case, after a time, folks started to come up with their own:

MLS: Plenty of parking
MLS: Demography is destiny
MLS: Your kids like Soccer, why not you?

In any case, email me or leave your suggestion in the comments box.

UPDATE: Off Wing photographer Ellen Blanchard has another suggestion:

MLS: 6.3 Billion people can't be wrong

Keep 'em coming.

Funny moment: We're in the middle of a lightning delay, and the PR people have switched some of the press box televisions to the U.S. -Argentina match from the Copa America. Right after Argentina tied the match 1-1, my buddy Brian Strauss from the Express stops by to say hello.

"Hey man, how's it going?"

"1-1. Argentina just scored"

Which is when I got the look that told me he was TiVoing the game.

Oops.

No ESPY Nomination For Crosby?

The ESPY nominations were announced yesterday (yawn), and while Sidney Crosby was nominated for best hockey player, The Sidney Crosby Show is angry that Sid the Kid was ignored in the Best Male Athlete category:

Just take a wild guess who DIDN'T make the list of nominees for Best Male Athlete... Yeah, I am stunned right now. Can someone out there please tell me how you can win the awards for league MVP and top point scorer of the NHL, be voted the most outstanding player by your peers, and be named the youngest captain in NHL history - all in one season - yet NOT be a consideration for male athlete of the year?!

Because the ESPYs are not about honoring athletic achievement, they're about glorifying and promoting ESPN. There's one way to guarantee that Crosby will get nominated for an ESPY, and that's to start challenging some of Wayne Gretzky's records.

So if/when Crosby gets near 92 goals, 163 assists or 215 points, that's around the time ESPN will show up with an ESPY nomination. It's also around the time I expect ESPN will show up wanting to take the NHL back into its prime time lineup.

No pressure Sid. No pressure.

Viktor Kozlov To Washington?

My friend Dmitry Chesnokov from Sovetsky Sport dropped me a line last night:

What do you think about Viktor Kozlov from the Islanders? Today he said that at least five NHL teams have contacted his agent enquiring about his services, with the Caps being one of the clubs. He also said that he sees the Caps as the best option because Ovechkin and he played well together in Turin. Any thoughts?

I think it's an interesting idea. Kozlov enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career on Long Island in 2006-07, scoring 25 goals and adding 26 assists, his best year since the 2002-03 season in Florida.

He made $865,000 on Long Island, so while he might be due a raise, it won't be a back breaker. Another overlooked plus: He was better in the shootout (5 for 13) than anybody in Washington, something that might mean an extra couple of standings points by the end of the year.

Here's what Sportsnet has to say about Kozlov's strengths:

Has great vision on the ice, imposing size and impressive imagination. Loves to handle the puck and does so with skill and finesse. Is very good when he lines up on either wing.

Wow, sounds a lot like Dainius Zubrus, doesn't it? And on the downside:

Must improve his ability to score goals in order to keep defenders honest. Is still looking for a level of consistency in the NHL. Does not look good when playing the pivot.

Wow, he sounds almost exactly like Zubrus, only a little older (played about three minutes less per game) and about $1 million per year cheaper. If anything, I wouldn't mind seeing him come to Washington to play right wing on the first line opposite Ovechkin and beside a player to be named later in the pivot.

UPDATE: Props to J.P. for the Karnak impression.

Last Call Sports Bar

Several years ago Jim Greene -- a goalie for the Last Chance Sports Bar Chuggers Hockey team -- ran into Ted Leonsis outside of a Caps game and Ted commented on Jim's tattoo of the old Capitals logo on his calf. Ted said that if they changed the logo and Jim liked it he would have to get a tattoo of the new logo.

A few weeks ago, after hearing that the logo was changing, Jim contacted Ted Leonsis and reminded him of their earlier conversation and Ted arranged for Jim and two of his teammates on the Last Call Sports Bar Chuggers to get their tattoos of the new logo at the draft party.

Photos of the tattoo are available after the jump.

Remember to check out Last Call Sports Bar if you are ever in the Waldorf area and ask Jim to show you his tattoo.

Life After Hockey

Last November over at NBC Sports, I wrote a column about the Professional Athlete Transition Institute, a project at Quinnipiac University that's designed to help professional athletes, mostly ex-NHL players, move on from the game once their time on the ice is over.

Earlier this month, nine ex-NHLers participated in a PATI-sponsored seminar to help them develop their broadcasting skills, working with ESPN's John Buccigross:

Landon Donovan: Star Of The Gringos

Here's a screenshot of Landon Donovan being interviewed on Univision following Sunday's 2-1 defeat of Mexico in the Gold Cup Final:

gringographic.jpg

For those of you wondering what "Estrella De Equipo Gringo" means, it's roughly "Star of the Gringo team".

Does anyone remember how we were all told that "Houston 1836" was offensive to Mexicans? I didn't think so. Funny how that's turning into a one-way street.

Thanks to Big Soccer, Brian Cook and With Leather for the links. And I think With Leather has the right idea -- it's time to start embracing this "Gringo" thing when it comes to the U.S. Men's National Team.

UPDATE: Sideline Views says the Mexican locker room may be imploding in the wake of the Gold Cup loss. Cry me a river ...

Is The NFL Cheating Former Players Out Of Disabilty Payments?

Yesterday, representatives of the NFL and the NFLPA were called to testify before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law on the NFL's disability plan for former players.

Here's a passage from an account from the Washington Post:

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) a member of the Judiciary Committee but not the subcommittee itself, asked Douglas Ell, counsel for the NFLPA and the disability plan, how many players actually receive disability payments.

"317," Ell replied.

Out of how many, she asked.

Ell said there are roughly 8,000 retired players.

"In one of the most dangerous sports in the history of mankind, only 300 players are receiving disability payments?" Waters said, her voice rising.

Even better, out of a $1.1 billion fund set aside for disability payments, only $20 million has been paid out.

This is a disgrace. How many more players like Mike Webster, Andre Waters and Justin Strzelczyk have to end up dead before the NFL wakes up to the tremendous damage the game causes to its players before it tosses them aside?

It should be clear by now that after decades of ignoring the problem or denying that it exists, the hens are coming home to roost. Here's hoping NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell does the right thing, and moves to help these players, so many of whom are obviously disabled from their time in the sport.

Female Reporter Manhandled In Crew Locker Room

Andrea Canales writes for a variety of Soccer publications and even has a blog of her own. Over the weekend while trying to do her job in the Columbus Crew locker room ... Just read it, I'll be here when you get back.

Tap, tap, tap.

I've worked plenty of D.C. United matches this year, and done it side by side with more than a few female reporters. That an incident like this would happen in 2007 is unacceptable. For some reason, though plenty of blogs have covered this, it hasn't broken big in the MSM. I hope it does soon.

Thanks to D.C. Sports Chick for the pointer.

CORRECTION: The incident actually took place in the Columbus Crew locker room.

UPDATE: I asked Andrea if anyone at MLS or the Crew had said anything to her about the incident. Here's the response:

Yes, they have, actually. The funny thing is that MLS is really a very media friendly league. There are hardly any primadona players who refuse interviews, for example. I've been contacted by league officials and even the commissioner now knows about the situation.

The Crew press people were very apologetic and at the same time, perplexed when they called me, because they said Marcos is a really nice guy, and that there have been women reporters in the Crew locker room before - at least once, they said, and he didn't seem to have a problem.

But they weren't trying to excuse it, and they said they'd talk to him and the entire team as well.

Really, I'm less concerned about an apology than I am about it just not happening again.

And the congregation said, amen.

One More Time With Adrian Dater And ESPN

Denver Westword has a nice followup piece on Adrian Dater's anti-ESPN rant from last week. After reading it, what's come to me is that what's being lost in all this is something very true about ESPN -- that they regularly hijack scoops from newspapers and report them to make it appear as if they broke the story first.

You know what I'm talking about, the text on the crawls that read, "ESPN has learned ...", while factually true, in that some ESPN producer or intern was watching the Web for news and came across somebody else's story and then passed it up the chain at the worldwide leader, it's a patently dishonest practice. I wish more newspaper people would point it out when it happens.

Thanks to my NHL Fanhouse colleague Grge Wyshynski for the pointer, who put all the pieces together when the Dater story broke last week. And let's not forget Jibblescribbits and Dear Lord Stanley too.

Tkachuk Returns To St. Louis

First we get the first round pick Nashville traded to Philly in the Forsberg deal boomerang back for the negotiating rights to Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell, now we have this:

The St. Louis Blues acquired the rights to center Keith Tkachuk from the Atlanta Thrashers on Tuesday along with a conditional fourth-round draft choice in 2008 (which could become a third-round choice in 2009) in exchange for a conditional first-round draft choice in 2008 (previously acquired from Atlanta on Feb. 25).

Like Tom Benjamin, I don't have a problem with deals like these. But what I do have a problem with is not making the quid pro quo clear at the time of the original deal. Even if there was a "future considerations" clause inserted at the time, it would be better than the way this is being presented now.

Is Good News For Soccer Bad News For Hockey?

From the AP:

The CONCACAF Gold Cup final attracted 41 percent more television households in the United States than the Stanley Cup finals clincher -- and that was just for the soccer game's Spanish-language telecast.

The United States' 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Mexico on Sunday received a 2.5 fast national rating on Univision, the network said Tuesday. That translates to 2.83 million households, nearly double the 1.48 million homes that watched the 2005 Gold Cup final between the United States and Panama.

But wait, there's more ...

This year's English-language telecast was on the Fox Soccer Channel, which is available in about 30 million homes and is not rated.

Interesting. Thanks to Rumors and Rants for the pointer.

Caps Media Relations Staff Wins Dillman Award

Over the course of my season in the press box at Verizon Center, there were more than a few moments when I had to rely on the help of the team's media relations staff. Needless to say, I was grateful to be able to rely on folks like Kurt Kehl, Nate Ewell, Paul Rovnak and Julie Petri, all solid professionals who went out of their way to treat me, and every other blogger who came into the press box, just like any other member of the working media.

I'm fortunate to be able to work with them, which is why I was so happy to hear that they'd been given the Dick Dillman Award by the Professional Hockey Writers Association for excellence in media relations. The Caps team is a crack group, and I'm glad to see them get the recognition they deserve.

Congratulations also go to the San Jose Sharks, who won the Dillman in the Western Conference.

NHL Draft Notebook

Greetings from Columbus, site of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. I got into the media hotel last night and had a nice time getting to know some of the local watering holes.

All the buzz right now is happening here in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency here in the Arena District. We had a false alarm about 10 minutes ago concerning the Bruins, as a knot of reporters gathered around Boston GM Peter Chiarelli even though he didn't have much to say.

And word has already leaked out that the Maple Leafs are on the verge of acquiring Vesa Toskala from the San Jose Sharks for the 13th pick.

After grabbing a late lunch here at the hotel, I'll be headed over to the Nationwide Arena to meet some local bloggers at the Bud Light Arena Pub. As I've written before, the most fun I have watching hockey comes when I have the chance to get together with other bloggers, and I'm looking forward to having a chance to meet the folks behind Jerseys and Hockey Love, Army of the Ohio, End of the Bench, and even the Acid Queen herself.

Later on tonight, look for me to be live blogging the draft over at the NHL Fanhouse. In short, it's going to be a busy day. I hope you decide to ride along.

UPDATE: All the skinny on Toskala, who will be making the move to Toronto along with Mark Bell.

UPDATE: Just fought my way inside the arena, where there's something of a crush at the media entrance, where Greg Wyshynski is still waiting. Here's a shot from the fan fest outside the arena:

nhl-fan-fest-062207.jpg

I'm set up in the 7th row on the media risers and have a pretty good view of the draft floor:

nhl-draft-floor-062207.jpg

Now I'm off to rub elbows with some of my blogger friends at the Arena Pub. Be back soon with more pics.

UPDATE: I'm a little late to this story, but the selloff continues in Columbus where Tomas Vokoun has been shipped to Florida:

The Predators will receive the Panthers' first-round pick in 2008, a second-round pick in the 2007 draft and a second-round pick they must use either Saturday or in the 2008 draft. Nashville will have at least nine draft picks in this draft.

General manager David Poile said they felt they could make the trade after watching Chris Mason, now 31, develop from a backup to a top goalie this season. They also have Pekka Rinne, a 2004 draft choice.

"With full confidence in Chris and Pekka Rinne, we felt as if we could make this move," Poile said in a statement. "Mason won 24 games for us this past season, starting 21 in a row at one point, and finished with the second-highest save percentage (.925) in the NHL.

One of my friends from On Frozen Blog informs me that Preds owner Craig Leipold doesn't want to sell the team to Jim Balsillie any longer because of his desire to move the team. I wonder who get to him. Click here for details from TSN.

Denver Post Hockey Writer Hates, Hates, Hates ESPN

Details from Jibblescribbits, Dear Lord Stanley and Greg Wyshynski.

Here's the excerpt everyone is talking about:

... hell yes, I'm glad I'm not some ESPN stooge, who might make more money than me, but spends his/her entire day preening around the athletic arena, microphone in hand, makeup case in hand, hair spray in hand, ready to ask an inane, suckup, kiss-butt question to a player that, at the end of the day, at the end of this life, at the end of this universe, HAS ABSOLUTELY NO RESONATING IMPACT ON THE MEMORIES OF ITS VIEWING AUDIENCE, AND ABSOLUTELY NO LASTING IMPACT ON ANYTHING REMOTELY ASSOCIATED WITH THE ART CALLED "JOURNALISM" WHICH YOU FALSELY ATTACH YOURSELVES TO."

Let's just say we've all had days like that. More later.

Why Doesn’t Hockey Have Something Like This?

For years now, Real GM has featured a piece of software that allows fans to come up with trades that would fit under the salary cap. Now it turns out that the company that owns the site is taking things to the next level.

Here's Newsday's Jim Baumbach:

As many as 14 general managers this season will be using RealGM.com to come up with trade ideas that fit under the salary cap. But there's a catch. Unlike Layden, these GMs are not using the same program as fans do.

RealGM.com, a popular basketball Web site that was founded in 2000 and has only four full-time employees, actually produces a software program specifically for NBA teams that helps them produce trade ideas. It costs teams about $30,000 per year, and chief operating officer Todd Essman (who grew up in Plainview) said currently nine teams have already signed up for next season. They could land another five.

Essman wouldn't name the teams, citing how sensitive some teams can be when it comes to their front-office machinations. But he said when they first came up with the idea in 2003 and went around the league trying to sell it, the Indiana Pacers and senior vice president David Morway were especially helpful.

How fast would a professional piece of software like this turn into the most popular destination over at NHL.com? I'd kill for something just like it.
