Jonathan Toews And Soggy Hockey Socks

From yesterday's John Buccigross column where the ESPN anchor posed some questions to the Chicago Blackhawks rookie. Still, Bucci reserved question #1 for himself:

Question from John Buccigross (South Windsor, Conn.): What is your opinion of the new NHL Reebok uniforms?

Answer from Toews: I don't notice anything with the jersey as much as I do with the socks. I'm a heavy sweater out on the ice and my feet are getting really wet in my skates. Other than that, I don't notice anything different than what I've been used to wearing. I'm not too fussy about that kind of thing. I just go out and play.

Meanwhile, Alex Ovechkin is blowing through two pairs of gloves per period just so he can stay dry.

Tuesday’s Notes from the Hockey World

Everyone is buzzing about the Capitals' 7-1 pasting of the Leafs last night. Having to do a little skating myself last night, at practice, I was unable to watch the game. But there's a few good roundups floating around.

Japers' Rink awarded every daily award, except for the Calder and the Aiken (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), to a Capitals player. Also, kudos to Karl Alzner, who was named captain of the Calgary Hitmen.

The Peerless Prognosticator holds his own with a list of firsts from last night's game.

It was as dominating a performance the Caps have had in any game since the lockout, marked by a collection of

Bondra Calls It a Career

After spending the beginning of this season mulling over his future, Peter Bondra, 17-year NHL veteran, has decided to retire. He leaves as the career goals and points leader for the Capitals, and, at the beginning of the season, was 37th in the NHL all-time in career goals, with 503 (472 w/ Caps), and was 89th all-time in points, with 892 (825 w/ Caps).

Bondra will not leave the hockey world, however, as he will not take on the role of general manager for the Slovak national hockey team.

Thanks to Tarik at Capitals Insider for the heads up.

On TiVo, NHL Center Ice and Disappearing Games

Last week, I picked up on a story that had been percolating for a while on the Web concerning how once NHL Center Ice subscriber in Brooklyn had discovered that since upgrading to a Series 3 TiVo DVR, the device had started to auto-delete games he was recording before they ever finished.

This morning, I got a call from an NHL official who declined to be identified who wanted to address the issue. She told me the following:

* The NHL has no policy restricting the use of NHL Center Ice content on TiVo or any other brand of DVRs and it isn't planning on creating one.

* What's happening now has nothing to do with the NHL. The NHL never requested that its content be copy protected in this way.

* The league is looking into the problem and will be contacting TiVo shortly in order to find a solution.

So there's the official word. I'll keep checking back with the league for updates.

Dan LeBatard, Please Stop Talking

Barry Melrose Rocks picked up on a story from Friday's airing of PTI concerning hockey's attitude towards fighting. LeBatard's question, summed up nicely by Kevin at BMR, is "Why is it that when the NBA fights, there are 15 game suspensions and playoff implications, etc. but when it happens in the NHL it's normalcy?"

Kevin writes a good response, but the most important part of it was the inclusion of a quote from Shaved Ice Hockey Blog; "Clearly you have no idea that there is an unwritten code in hockey that still exists."

I happened to purchase The Code last week, and am about halfway through it. Ross Bernstein does an excellent job of explaining why NHL teams use enforcers, why fights happen, and what unwritten rules players must follow when looking for or getting into a fight. For the most part, fights aren't spontaneous, like they would be in other sports, but are a buildup of other events, where both fighters weren't even involved until their actual fight. The Code looks at fighting before and after the lockout, and there are several responses from current and former players on such topics as "Rookies Challenging the Pecking Order," "Swinging the Momentum," "Protection," and "The Rules of Engagement." It also looks at both the McSorely and Bertuzzi incidents. I'm only halfway through with the book, but it is already proving to be a great read. You won't look at fights the same way again.

Capitals Get Roughed Up By Vancouver

The Washington Capitals fell to the Vancover Canucks despite a last minute rally. The Canucks walked away with a 3-2 victory and Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo chalked up his 10th victory against the Caps.

While the Caps weren't happy with the loss, it was the injury to Chris Clark in the final moments of the game that worried many. An Alex Ovechkin slap shot hit Clark in the head, following the game Clark had stitches in his left ear. It was coach Glen Hanlon that said what most people were thinking, "it is not going to be good."

Another Reason to Ditch Your TiVo

I've been thinking about buying my first HDTV for a couple of weeks now, which is why I discovered that the new TiVo Series 3 HD is incompatible with my DirecTV service. That's a real bummer for me, as I invested in a lifetime TiVo subscription back in 2000 when I bought my old Sony SVR-2000.

So, over the past two weeks or so, I seriously contemplated something I was loathe to do: Abandoning the DirecTV service that I've grown to love in favor of returning to terrestrial cable. Safe to say, it's something I really would like to avoid, given my previous experience with Comcast. As for turning to Verizon Fios TV, that's a non-starter as that service still doesn't carry NHL Center Ice.

But now, thanks to some news I've picked up via Greg Wyshynski at FanHouse, my blood is genuinely about to boil over. As it turns out, Brooklyn-based hockey fan John Niedermeyer is reporting that the new TiVo Series 3 HD DVR is auto-deleting NHL Center Ice content:

We recently upgraded our TiVo unit from an old DirecTiVo, to the new Series 3 TiVo HD, which apparently implements unnaturally strict copy protection on premium content. Because the new unit utilizes CableCards, TiVo has different rules for these TiVos as compared to Series 2 units ...

What this means is that NHL Center Ice content is copy protected, and will be deleted within hours of the game

Zdeno Chara vs. David Koci

You might want to wait until your breakfast is fully digested before watching the footage of the beating Zdeno Chara unleashed on David Koci last night in Boston:

As HockeyFights.com noted, it wasn't that long ago that Koci had his nose bashed in by Wade Belak, so he might want to sit out a couple of rounds in order to heal up.

ESPN Gets It Wrong Again

It's hard to understand just how ESPN can be so tone deaf when it comes to showing nothing but disrespect for its viewers. For the past few minutes, I've been watching an MLS playoff match between D.C. United and the Chicago Fire on ESPN 2. A moment or two ago, ESPN decided to break into live match coverage for an absolutely unnecessary SportsCenter 30 at 30 Update.

During this update, Michelle Bonner did nothing but pass along news items that could have easily been handled on the crawl at the bottom of the screen, but that didn't stop the network from shrinking the action while letting a live shot of Bonner in the studio predominate.

Why bother? Because ESPN couldn't possibly let you forget that SportsCenter was coming on at the conclusion of college football on the mother ship. You know, the highlight show that's more important than actual live sports coverage.

Hockey Night in Washington; Caps vs. Bolts

Joe Dumas here in the box tonight, as Eric has given me the opportunity to cover my first regular season game this year. With just under 10 minutes left before the puck drops, the crowd looks especially light. I don't see a row in the building thats over half full, never mind a section. On a side note, being from MA, I'd like to send out a GO SOX to all the Boston faithful. Here's hoping for another Series championship. And now that that's taken care of, back to the game at hand...

The story for the Caps so far this season has been the question of who will show up to play, Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde. The Caps went 3-0 to open the season, scoring 7 goals while allowing 2. They also had more shots than they gave up (85-83) and did not allow a powerplay goal, going 12-12 on the kill. In their last 4 losses, however, they have been outscored 17-7, outshot 137-111, averaged almost double their penalty minutes - 16.0 compared to 8.7 in their first 3 games - and have given up 9 powerplay goals, going 16-25 on the kill.

Both Tampa Bay (4-2-0) and Washington (3-4-0) come into tonight's game needing a win. Tampa Bay is 0-2-0 on the road this season, while the Caps need to stop their 4-game losing streak. Alexander Ovechkin is the only Cap with 6 pts., while the Bolts have 5 skaters with 6 or more points - Prospal, Lecavalier, St. Louis, Richards, and Ranger. So look for the shutdown line of Pettinger, Gordon, and Laich to be busy tonight. The Caps scoring aces need to step up tonight and match the scoring threats of Tampa Bay.

Update: Either everyone was on the concourse or came in late, because the attendance has doubled, although it still isn't very packed.

Game Summary after the jump.

The Washington Times On The Caps And Bloggers

In today's edition of the Washington Times, Tim Lemke takes a look at the Washington Capitals and their strategy to actively engage local bloggers who write about the team. For the most part, Lemke gets the story right about how the Caps have embraced bloggers like the folks here at Off Wing, Japers' Rink and On Frozen Blog -- among others -- and made it a part of their media strategy.

I guess the one thing that left me a bit baffled was the quote Lemke chose to feature from the Off Wing archive:

"This team is as different from last season as you can imagine. The power play hasn't looked this good since the days of Oates, Bondra and Gonchar. Not only is the team controlling the zone on the power play, they're generating chance after chance

The Blackhawks Discover Cable Television

Rocky Wirtz, now seemingly fully at the controls of the Chicago Blackhawks following the death of his father last month, has authorized one of the most momentous changes in the history of the franchise as the team will now seek to broadcast their home games on the local Comcast SportsNet affiliate:

"It's important to understand that CSN's current schedule was developed well over a year ago, so fitting the Hawks into that schedule can't be done overnight,'' Wirtz wrote in the memo. "But it can be done, and, while no definitive agreements have been reached, we are convinced that it is the appropriate next step to re-energizing Chicago hockey fans, and creating new fans. We are also working on a long-term strategy for televising additional home games in the future.''

Two words: Thank God. The NHL is a more interesting place now that the Blackhawks seem to have emerged from a long slumber on the ice. Here's hoping that this isn't the last change the front office has in store for the team.

One In Five Sports Fans Won’t Jinx Their Team

Over the past few days I've been noticing that the AP has been conducting some polling, something that's resulted in some interesting stories -- like this one on how one out of every five sports fans is superstitious.

The survey showed no real difference by gender, race or education in whether people try finding a way to help their team win. But those who do tend to be younger and make more money than those willing to risk letting the athletes determine a game's outcome. They also are more likely to be single.

Because, you know, that whole refusing the change your underwear thing is more or less socially unacceptable if you're in a serious relationship.

Monday’s Caps Practice

The biggest news today is Coach Hanlon's mixing and matching of the 5 forward lines that are practicing today. Tarik has the trios at the Post.

In search of some scoring from somewhere, Coach Hanlon has made some changes to his lines. Here what they look like today:

Ovechkin-Kozlov-Clark (the captain returns to the top line)
Backstrom-Nylander-Semin (Alexander returns from injury)
Pettinger-Steckel-Gordon (Steckel replaces Clark)
Brashear-Laich-Motzko (Motzko where he probably belongs)
Fleischmann-Sutherby-Bradley (could be a move coming here)

The Caps started out practice with some passing and shooting drills, nothing hard. With 5 fulls lines it was an odd drill choice, with most of the team standing at center ice while 4 guys took up the whole sheet at a time. Although now they're working on some 3-2 pressure drills with a lot of chasing and hitting in the corners.

Update: After a break for an ice cut, the boys are back out there. It looks like they're doing a little scrimmaging, with a lot of battling along the boards.

Update: After the scrimmage the team is doing windsprints in groups. Even Olie and Brent are skating, even staying relatively close to the other guys.

Putting a Roof on Winter; Mr. Hockey’s Windbreaker

book

Today's story from Putting a Roof on Winter revolves around the most important windbreaker in hockey history.

The one Red Wing whom Carson Cooper didn't pluck from the wilderness was harvested by his western counterpart, Fred Pinckney, who invited a strapping young man from Saskatchewan to attend the Detroit training camp after the kid had been lost in the shuffle by the New York Rangers. When Jack Adams saw the 16 year old's training camp performance, he knew that "Gordie Howe was the best hockey prospect of that age I ever saw."

Still, the man who would earn the moniker "Mr. Hockey," who would etch his name into the ice across six decades in pro hockey, and who would come to define what hockey meant in "Hockeytown," nearly wasn't a Red Wing at all. Young Gordie liked the snazzy Detroit team windbreakers he saw at training camp, and Jolly Jack Adams promised to get him one, then forgot about his promise. But Gordie didn't forget.

When Adams offered Howe a contract the next fall, Howe wouldn't sign, saying Adams had broken his word. 'Naturally, I was flabbergasted, and I asked him what he meant,' Adams recalled. "'Well,' he said, 'you promised me a windbreaker and you never gave it to me.' You can't imagine how quickly I got that windbreaker. But that's how close I came to losing him."

So the man who hold the NHL records for seasons, games, and right wing records for career goals, assists, and points, as well as having the most (22) total and consecutive seasons of 20 goals or more, was nearly lost to an undelivered windbreaker. For a kid whose father made 40 cents an hour as a maintenance superintendant in Saskatoon, and who, at the age of 4, had to share a pair of skates with his sister, each one going out wearing one skate, a windbreaker was a big deal.
