The big story today is that the Capitals have to cut their roster from the 26 they currently have to 23 by 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. According to Capitals Insider and A View from the Cheap Seats, Ben Clymer has cleared waivers and is headed to Hershey. At the Insider, Tarik is narrowing the possibilities for the last 2 cuts.
Here are the candidates: forward Jakub Klepis doesn't have a contract and appears to be a long shot to get one. Center David Steckel and defensemen Jeff Schultz and Mike Green don't have to clear waivers to be sent down. Schultz, though, told reporters after last night's game that he had been told to get a place to live in Washington. Green, as of last night, hadn't been told anything.
It sounds like Steckel and Schultz are in, while Klepis and Green are out. We'll find out for sure tomorrow.
And over at japers' Rink, JP has listed some interesting stats from the preseason. Some surprising notes - Johnson did better than Kolzig, while the entire Caps team had as many powerplay goals (5) as San Jose's Devin Setoguchi, the 8th overall pick from the '05 Entry Draft. Doesn't sound great, but hey, it's only the preseason.
By far the most interesting and teasingly suggestive news came from the big guy himself, Ted Leonsis.
We have some depth now and we are ready for the season to start. I wouldn't rule out a last minute trade...
