‘Skins Headed to Postseason

With the Redskins needing a win or a Vikings loss to make the playoffs, they took matters into their own hands and took care of Dallas 27-6. It can be said that the Cowboys had a few key guys, including Terrell Owens, out, making it easier for the 'Skins. Tony Romo also exited early, and it was clear Dallas wasn't playing for the win.

The Redskins, however, played an excellent game no matter who was on the other side of the ball. Todd Collins made some spectacular passes, slipping passes into holes that didn't seem to exist. One commentator even noted that it seemed like every pass Collins threw had to be reviewed, because they were so close and spectacular. Reche Caldwell made some nice sliding catches, and Clinton Portis was a terror out of the backfield.

I'll admit I only became a 'Skins fan this season. After watching the first few games of the season with some friends, I drafted Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis onto my fantasy football team. By then I was watching every week. The 'Skins have had a rollercoaster season, and I'm excited to see how they do next week in Seattle.

Ovie and Backstrom on Inside the NHL

I flipped on the NHL Network, and Alex is being asked a few interesting questions. Since his mom played basketball and his dad played soccer, he was asked how he got into hockey. "I had a dream...to play in the NHL." He also mentioned that he never really played hockey outdoors; he only skated outdoors for fun "with the pretty girls."

Nicklas Backstrom was interviewed as well. He was asked about the English he's had to learn, and he admitted some of the things he's learned in the locker room can't be said on tv. And when asked for his thoughts on his game being compared to that of Peter Forsberg, he said that "I don't really care...I just want to play my game."

They were both short, informal interviews full of light-hearted questions, and it was nice to see the league giving the Caps some coverage. Ovechkin was expected, but Backstrom was a nice bonus.

What’s Wrong With Alex Ovechkin?

I'm still sitting here with the family on Long Island watching the Caps and the Pens, and it looks like we're getting some conflicting reports on the condition of Alex Ovechkin, who left the game earlier tonight with an undisclosed injury.

The broadcast team on HDNet reported earlier tonight that Ovechkin had suffered a back injury. Yet, just a few minutes later, that same HD crew reported that Caps PR denied that Ovechkin had a back injury, merely adding that he would not be available if the game went to a shootout. Given the team's track record when it comes to revealing a player's injury status, I'm wondering whether or not we'll ever get official confirmation as to what's really going on.

UPDATE: Per Tarik, Alex is fine, and the wound is superficial. The team says he's expected to play against Ottawa. Brent Johnson on the other hand, is out for 2-4 weeks.

Patriots-Giants Goes Big-Time

On Wednesday the NFL announced that the game between the Patriots and Giants will not only be broadcast by NFL network and local Boston and New York stations, but by CBS and NBC as well.

The NFL originally scheduled the game on the NFL Network, meaning for most of the country only subscribers to that channel could watch the game - local stations from the two cities are able to broadcast the game under NFL policy.

This was clearly a good move by the NFL, albeit a forced one. A few senators threatened to "reconsider the league's antitrust exemption." This occurred earlier in the year, when millions of fans were blocked out of the Dallas-Green Bay game, when both teams came in with 1 loss, and were both considered the top teams in the NFC. But because it was on the NFL Network, not many people saw it.

It would have happened again if not for New England's chance at a perfect regular season. Even with one loss, the historic impact wouldn't be there, and there wouldn't be as many upset fans, allowing the game to be left to the NFL Network and the NFL to slink into the playoffs with its tail between its legs.

The NFL Network channel seems like a decent idea, one that allows hardcore football fans to get all the NFL football they want, all the time. But the normal fan just wants to watch football games. He wants to be able to turn on his tv on Sunday and see some football. He doesn't want to get updates online - if he even goes online - because the networks aren't being allowed to carry it. And that's where the NFL Network alienates those same fans it wants to bring in.

And where have their broadcast tactics gotten them? Nowhere. Not only will the game between the Patriots and Giants be televised, it will be simulcast on NBC and CBS. So in addition to local channels, it will be available on up to 4 channels, including the NFL Network. And while everyone is proclaiming the fans' victory over the league, you can't help but wonder, aren't they supposed to be on the same side?

Big Day for Boudreau, Caps

The corner the Caps have been rounding since Thanksgiving has been turned. The Capitals have officially removed the "interim" tag from coach Bruce Boudreau. Tarik at Capitals Insider noted earlier that "he has quickly gained the respect of the dressing room and appears to have the team heading in the right direction."

GM George McPhee said that;

We just wanted an opportunity to watch him at this level and see how would do, watch him action. Some people change when they get to this level. He hasn't. We really like the way he took control and he's got our team playing well.

And of course the players responded by beating divisional rivals Tampa Bay 3-2 in regulation, thus gaining their first win under Coach Boudreau.

Boudreau will face a real test with the Caps next five games, as they face Pittsburgh, Ottawa back-to-back, Boston, and Montreal. If he really wants to kick things off, there's no better way that to take some games from these good teams.

Merry Xmas

With the Holiday upon us, things are going to be quieter than usual around here for a little while. As always, you can check out my stuff at FanHouse, and I'll still be on duty over the Holiday week at The Sporting News.

In the meantime, Merry Xmas, and I'll see everybody again on Wednesday.

Crosby Reaches Another Milestone

Nearly midway into the second period of the Bruins-Penguins game Sidney Crosby received his first ever NHL major penalty. B's defenseman Andrew Ference was hanging on him into the B's corner, and after Crosby got rid of the puck there was some shoving. It turned into a fight, but not much of one. Crosby's visored helmet never came off, so his head wasn't in too much danger. They went down after throwing only a couple decent punches each, and it was over pretty quick.

Ference ended up getting an additional two minutes for roughing, which I'm not sure I understand; but maybe that's just cause I'm a Bruins fan.

Coupled with his two assists and one goal, Sid the Kid gets his first Gordie Howe hat trick less than halfway into the game.

The Old College Try On Live Blogging

Back in June, PostmanE from We Are The Postmen and I had an extensive discussion about the evolution of live blogging and game coverage. For those of you who might not recall, the whole conversation got kicked off after the NCAA ejected a Louisville Courier-Journal reporter from the press box after it discovered he was live-blogging one of Louisville University's regional playoff games.

Now, it's six months later, and the NCAA has finally gotten around to issuing its own guidelines on how folks in the press box will be allowed to live blog NCAA events (PDF). Needless to say, the results are a mixed bag. Here are the limitations on blogging for Winter Sports:

Like PostmanR, I can't help but be a little baffled. Check out this passage from the policy:

Escape From Vegas

It's the end of the year, and I've been doing my level best to burn all of my extra vacation as possible. One way I did it was to spend last weekend in Las Vegas. I write about that, among other things, at this morning's Ice Sheet over at FanHouse.

While I Was Gone

It's been a quiet two weeks here as many of you may have noticed. Eric has resurfaced with some great writeups, and I will be back to my roundups and other pieces of note in a few days. Last papers and finals are being taken care of, and one of the first things Eric told me on taking this job was that I shouldn't worry about it when I needed to focus on my work. But anyways, I have a few minutes free today, so I figure I'd chime in on a few things I've noticed the past few days.

* I can't remember the last time new goalies have been so important. Phoenix wins 4 straight to start off with Bryz, and Boston has 2 in a row with Auld, including a 44 save effort against Buffalo. And in Detroit backup Chris Osgood has been phenomenal; his stellar play keeping the Dominator mostly on the bench. Even Dallas' Mike Smith is outplaying Marty Turco.

* Where did all the high-scoring games come from? Last night Philly gets an 8-2 win, Colorado beats St. Louis 9-5 the other night, Buffalo gets 7 against San Jose Saturday after giving up 8 to LA last Thursday. I've seen higher combined totals, but single-team numbers this high this often is surprising.

* We all knew Detroit was good, but this good? They've quietly been putting together a league-best 46 points, the only team so far to crack 40. They're currently on pace to break 120 points, which shouldn't be much of a surprise, considering they're the only team to break 120 points since the inception of the Presidents' Trophy for best record. Two years ago they finished with 124 points, and even hit 131 in the '95-'96 season.

* NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and league disciplinarian Colin Campbell held a conference call with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren on Monday. It's about time. I don't mind a physical style of hockey, hell, I picked Anaheim to win it all last year because I thought their hard-hitting style would get it done. But when you have 5 guys suspended 30 games into the season, and are accounting for such a large percentage of league suspensions, something needs to be done. It's not as if the entire league is running wild, just the Flyers. I'm not saying don't play your game, I just think they need to play physical hockey within reason, and with some class.

* The goaltender category on the All-Star ballot is the screwiest thing I've ever seen. The East has Ray Emery, Cristobal Huet, and Olaf Kolzig. I mean I love Olie, but Tim Thomas, who sits right above him in the wins category, has a better save percentage (2.14-2.79) and a better GAA (.936-.900). In the West, the Dominator is the only goalie I'd really replace, and it'd be with his backup, Chris Osgood. I know there's a limit to how many players a team can put in, and generally everyone sends in the same couple guys every year, and that goes for all players. Jonathan Cheechoo is on the ballot again, even though he has only 9 points. I understand the selection is done early in the season, but I don't understand why it can't be put off for a couple weeks or so and give the season time to unfold, and give players the opportunity to make the All-Star game based on stats, not name.

Where In The World Has Eric Been?

Not anywhere in particular. I've just been so busy that I haven't had all that much time to tend to things here at Off Wing. To catch up, here's some of my writing from elsewhere that I've been keeping up with:

FanHouse:

Finally, I've also got a massive backlog of video I've only recently begun to dig into. Here's a clip from back on November 26, where Washington Caps defenseman Tom Poti complains about the quality of the ice at Verizon Center:

Hockey Night in Washington; Caps vs. Thrashers

First Period: WSH 2, ATL 0
The Caps came out looking like they really wanted this one. They controlled the puck, they took advantage of Atlanta mistakes, and they put away their chances. Over the course of the period they started to lose that control, and Atlanta started to play a little better. But by the end of the period the Caps pulled themselves back together and go into the locker room up 2-0.
