Who is Eric McErlain?
I was born in New York City and raised on the Long Island. I left home for good in the mid 1980s to study at Catholic University, where I graduated with a degree in Politics in 1989. I've lived in the Washington area ever since and now make my home in Reston, Virginia.
After graduation, I embarked on a career in corporate communications and public relations. Starting out as an editorial assistant, I fulfilled my dream to work as a speech writer and then re-invented myself as an online communications guru. Today, as the direct result of a connection I made because of my blogging, I'm Vice President at a public relations firm.
Long before starting Off Wing Opinion, I worked from time to time as a freelance writer. My work appeared in the Washington Post, Washington Times (my column on fantasy sports ran from September 1993 to August 1994), Pro Football Weekly and PR News.
My sports blogging has led to opportunities to write elsewhere. During the 2006-07 NHL season, I wrote a column for NBC Sports. I joined FanHouse as one of their original bloggers in August 2006 and served as lead blogger for NHL FanHouse from April 2007 to April 2009. In 2007 I started writing for The Sporting News, as an NHL columnist for the 2007-08 NHL season before transitioning to The Sporting Blog in 2008-09. At the end of that season, I left FanHouse and The Sporting News to come back to Off Wing Opinion.
I've also guest posted at Deadspin.
Just a few months after the end of the NHL lockout, Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis invited me to watch a game with him. That led to Leonsis to ask me to write a policy to help professional sports franchises work with bloggers, a policy the team still uses today. In 2006, I asked for a photo pass, a request that resulted in the creation of OffWing Photo. Today, OffWing Photo has a staff of four photographers, and is recognized as a legitimate photo agency by the National Hockey League, Major League Soccer, the ATP World Tour and World Team Tennis.
